Why the Resurrection Matters

Pastor Matt Tarr – AM Sermon

Easter Sunday 2016

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-19

Is it possible to believe in the life of Christ while denying His resurrection without consequences? Can we really believe Jesus simply gave us a moral code to live by as He stood against the hypocrisy of His day? Or, can we affirm the Resurrection while adhering to a philosophical system that denies the essence of our faith? Paul argues adamantly no, and provides us with four serious consequences for denying the Resurrection.

How an Unpayable Debt is Paid

Pastor Matt Tarr

Good Friday Service

Scripture: Colossians 2:8-15

When George Whitefield’s brother came to salvation, he declared, “What precious Scripture! And how is it that it comes with such force to me? I bless God for that, then He will save me. I trust my soul in His hands; He has forgiven me.” How is it that such a man could obtain forgiveness? How can any man be reconciled to God with our debt is infinitely unpayable because of our sin? Paul gives the answer: only if God pays our debt.

Why the Triumphal Entry is Triumphant

Pastor Matt Tarr – AM Sermon

Palm Sunday 2016

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

After fourteen chapters correcting the conduct of the believers in Corinth, Paul then writes to correct a serious doctrinal error for the first time in his letter. The church in Corinth was beginning to compromise its study in the Word of God because of the influence of worldly philosophy. However, Paul gives three facts concerning the Gospel truth that prove why Jesus’ Triumphal Entry is triumphant.

The Wisdom of Ecclesiastes

HPBC Elder: Greg Lynch – PM Sermon

Scripture: Selected Scriptures

This sermon traces the themes of enjoying God-given gifts and using fully life’s opportunities through an examination of the contexts of three summary statements in Ecclesiastes (2:24; 3:12-13; 9:9). Those who attempt to understand “life” from a humanistic and rationalistic world-and-life view find only meaninglessness. Only those who both recognize and submit to God as the Sovereign Lord and the highest value discover eternal meaning and purpose in their lives.

The Gravity of True Discipleship

Pastor Matt Tarr – AM Sermon

Scripture: Mark 9:42-50

In this account, Jesus gives some of the most serious charges found on the pages of Scripture to His disciples that every believer in Christ should consider. The first charge is to take great care not to lead another believer to stumble in the faith, while the second, is to deal radically with sin in one’s own life.

Back to Basics: The Holiness of God

Pastor Matt Tarr – PM Sermon

Scripture: Selected Scriptures

God commands all people, “Be holy as I am holy.” But what exactly does that mean? He is holy in all his attributes, and infinitely set apart in all His ways. Not only that, but understanding the holiness of God causes us to realize the complete impossibility of that command without obtaining the righteousness of Christ.

The Test of Christian Character: Humility

Pastor Matt Tarr – AM Sermon

Scripture: Mark 9:33-41

Upon entering Capernaum for a final time, Jesus asks His disciples the question they didn’t want to hear, and the question exposes the condition of their hearts. Their pride prevented them from understanding the necessity of Christ’s suffering and His message called them to be humbled.

Back to Basics: One Perfect Word

Pastor Matt Tarr – PM Sermon

Scripture: Selected Scriptures

When we speak of inspiration, we mean that the Bible is wholly correct and completely without error on all matters about which it speaks and in all its assertions. While that might seem like a basic truth, the term “inspiration” has been twisted and modified from its historical use, even among major leaders of evangelicalism. The Bible’s revelation about its own words is quite clear though. If the Bible is not absolutely pure, then it isn’t the Word of God.

Fear and Guilt

Pastor Matt Tarr – AM Sermon

Scripture: Mark 9:30-37

Having just cast the demon out of a boy in a significant moment teaching the importance of faith, Jesus immediately passes through Galilee, focusing his attention on training His disciples. From Caesarea Philippi to Capernaum, Jesus taught the twelve about His death, burial, and resurrection. The disciples are still confused, and instead of submitting their plan to God’s, they instead argued about who among them would have the greatest position in the Kingdom.
